Books I read this month (and in what format — audio, physical, kindle):
📖 The Bee Sting by Paul Murray — I’ve been in my Big Book Era and love reading longer (500+ page) books to really follow characters along in their journeys. I loved Pachinko and I really enjoyed this one that was recommended to me by many of you! I can understand people’s frustrations with it but this book is a feat. The depth and complexity of the characters in this family — as individuals and within the roles they play for each other — was beautifully explored. What does it mean to be a family? To be a person in a family? To have your own needs and secrets? It’s not a life changing book but I would recommend it highly to anyone who especially likes a character driven book.
📱Fighting for Our Friendships: The Science and Art of Conflict and Connection in Women’s Relationships by Danielle Bayard Jackson — This is an important book about understanding our freindships as women and how we can sustainably do conflict well to maintain and enjoy them over the years.
🎧 The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean— This was a decent palette cleanser mystery! I was surprised which is always the metric in which I review mysteries.
🎧 Finlay Donovan Digs Her Own Grave by Elle Cosimano — I have loved this cozy mystery series since the beginning, sooo if you know you know, and if you don’t know and you like cozy mysteries (Tita Rosie’s Kitchen, Thursday Murder Club) you’ll like this too.
📖 The Shadow Cabinet by Juno Dawson — I love this feminist, witchy series (this is book 2) and I highly recommend if you like cozy fantasy, female friendships, and some feminist themes regarding the patriarchy.
What I’ve watched:
Deli Boys: We binged watched this show on Hulu in one day (yesterday!). It’s fun, funny, light, but also dark, and I love Poorna Jagannathan so much.
My husband and I love Survivor, and finally caught up on Season 47!
Of course, I am devouring/devoured Severance and White Lotus as new episodes drop. We are also watching Righteous Gemstones.
I loved this video on how race was discussed in Severance:
Fascinating articles and topics:
This is not fascinating but horrific and I am in such distress thinking about what is happening right here in our backyards.
I think we all need these reminders when we feel like other people are more successful than us. Here’s a reminder that recovering from burnout looks like so much more than just resting. I’m super excited about this Masterclass by my dear friend and colleague Alexandra Solomon on managing anxiety and uncertainty. And I love this Instagram breakdown on “immigrant clutter core”:
