I’ll be facilitating the conversation clubs this month. The first is January 12 at 1-2pm and the second is January 30 at 7-8pm. Mark your calendars! Reminders and links will be sent a couple days in advance.
Culturally Enough. is changing. I need your help!
(If you don’t want to read this section, just listen to the audio)
This year, or at least for now, I am going to try something different. Instead of monthly themes, I want to write more from the heart — on what is happening in the moment for me, for you, in the world. This will include the same — research where applicable, my anecdotes and thoughts/observations, and my own life experiences. I want to get to the precise issues we navigate — things not discussed elsewhere. I want to return to why I started this and BGT. I miss it.
I want to share my love of reading, build reading guides for books we read together to help you self-examine, host a monthly zoom book club, breakdown an important research data I have discovered and its implications on you, get us together on an app (Discord, Slack?) so you can talk to each other, I want to plan out quarterly workshops for paid subscribers at no additional cost. While our two regular convo clubs with Avani aren’t going anywhere, I want to spontaneously host extra. I want to answer your burning questions. I want to hear how you are really doing. I want to show up more often, more conversationally, more humanely. I don’t want to just speak at you. I want to speak with you.
Instead of being on a rigid schedule, where I am more distant in how I engage here, I want to be an active participant. I miss being in conversations with you, facilitating workshops where you can engage with each other and learn from me, and I want to do more of that. But in order to be able to sustainably carve out time (and say no to consulting and other projects) i have to be prioritizing reciprocity.
So, the newsletter subscription will significantly increase in price on March 1, but if you are a paid subscriber before then, you will be locked in to the current rate.
“Only new paid subscribers will pay the new rate once the price change has taken effect. Existing subscribers will remain on the plan they originally paid for. Subscriptions always renew at the original rate the subscriber pays as long as they don't cancel and resubscribe.” — According to Substack.
I need your help!
What else what else what else? You are the expert. You are the community. I want to hear from you. I am running focus groups to get your feedback on this space — where we can grow, what you want, and how it can be a solution for you. Respond to this email with “Focus group” and i’ll add you to the email list going out next week! You can be paid or free!
Introducing Diaspora Reads: A Book Club:
I am bringing back the short-lived book club! This is a chance for us to read together, fiction and nonfiction by a diasporic author about belonging, acceptance, culture, identity, mental health and more. You can follow along on IG for free updates and conversation opportunities. But you will also be able to join the monthly (last day of every month) Zoom book club to chat about the book. Moving forward this is an automatic access for paid subscribers (along with a not-your-typical reading guide for self examination) but for January, it’s free for everyone.
Sign up to discuss Maame with me on January 31 at 7-8pm ET (time will vary moving forward).
Read more for the paid subscriber essay today on family unity… or family oppression. Does your family pressure every member to display “togetherness and unity” even when it doesn’t feel good?
