Introducing: 🎙️So We've Been Told
The first podcast centering your stories with expert insights
It’s here 🥳 How cute is this artwork?!
I have been conceptualizing this for over a year, but have been working hard on this after finally building out my podcast team since October! It’s been hours a day of concept development, market research, script writing, recording, re-tracking, brainstorming, listening, and hearing from you!
I declined any opportunities to work with a production company (even though I had offers) because I didn’t want to give up creative control or make any compromises on how your voices and stories were used.
Every episode features YOU in voice note form and real talk, practical wisdom, and expert conversations. I cannot wait to share this with you. But for now, listen to the trailer for a sneak peek!
About the show: So We’ve Been Told is a bold take on wellness, love, and family by sharing what it means to live between cultures. In a new eight-part series, award-winning therapist Sahaj Kaur Kohli breaks down the stories we’ve been told about bicultural identity, relationships and mental health. Featuring real talk, practical advice, expert wisdom and stories from her 250,000-strong community, Brown Girl Therapy, Sahaj helps you understand your past and unpack the present so you can thrive on your own terms.
The eight episodes will explore:
Living a double life between cultures (April 9)
Our family secrets — the impact and how to heal (April 9)
Intercultural Relationships (April 23)
Is your immigrant parent a narcissist? (May 7)
Duty as a form of love – and control (May 21)
Immigrant guilt and culturally-nuance emotion regulation (June 4)
Estrangement, low contact, no contact (June 18)
Sex, pleasure, and attraction (July 2)
Which episode are you most excited for?! Tell us in the comments!
This show is for anyone who lives between cultures – or anyone who loves, works with, or knows someone who does (hint: you!).
Also, all of you paid subscribers are getting exclusive bonus content here in Culturally Enough every other week between episodes dropping. So do not go anywhere — it’s going to be extra community voices, bonus tips and takeaways, behind the scenes, and things that didn’t make it in the episode the previous week!
It’s also not too late to send in voice notes! This work centers your voices with anonymity to offer the diverse perspectives and experiences of this non-monolithic group while also highlighting our shared stories. We are still accepting submissions for episodes 5, 7, 8. Email back if you want the prompts to submit your story!
But What Will People Say?
This month, we are going to be integrating the podcast and its themes into Culturally Enough. Last month, we talked about family secrets and episode 2 in the podcast is all about family secrets. It launches next Wednesday with episode 1!!!
I literally wrote the book on this fear of what others will think or say if they saw our wholeness, if they knew certain things about us that we keep secretive out of fear of judgment or shame.
Well, this month, I am going to share some of the research and cultural context on this common fear: But what will others say? Because there’s actually a term for this and it might not be what you think! Stay tuned!
Mark your calendars for community events this month
Community conversation clubs (paid only): A time to connect with others in the community over Zoom (and a cup of tea!), and hear from, lean on, and learn from each other.
April 8 at 6-7pm ET
April 22 at 8-9pm ET
Book club (any subscriber): This is a community led bimonthly book club run sometime during the last week of every other month. We will read a mix of fiction and nonfiction on identity, culture, and mental health. You can find recaps here.
April 28 at 6pm ET we are discussing Evil Eye by Etaf Rum
