This is a new monthly offering, Guided Meditations, for paid subscribers.
Hey y’all - this month’s theme has been about filial piety. What do we owe our immigrant parents, and how do we balance duty with caring for ourselves? So today, I wanted to focus our guided reflection on an unconventional method for doing this. I wanted to play with the idea of losing ourselves.
Sounds strange, right? So much of what we hear in today’s rhetoric is about how to find ourselves. But sometimes, finding ourselves really means finding boxes that we squeeze ourselves into. We cling on to identities like “I am a good daughter,” or “I am the responsible sibling,” or “I am always logical.” And while there is nothing inherently wrong with that - I’ve found that getting lost is often the best way to find something new - something we didn’t even know we were searching for.
